- As spring came, and the first shoots
- showed in the dark, still-cold soil of
- the garden, Peter brought Jimmy a
- present.
-
- It was a small thing, a chip he'd grown
- himself, hacking in the synthesizer at
- Ran's office. Such play in off-hours was
- permitted though not encouraged.
-
- "It's a project I have," Peter told
- Jimmy. "This is a little spin-off. Slide
- it in the ROM slot on your monitor.
- Here, like this."
-
- "What'll it do?" Jimmy asked. He watched
- curiously as Peter expertly opened the
- slot and slid the chip inside.
-
- "It's a...well, a sort of memory
- enhancer. It won't cure you, of course,
- but it can provide a kind of external
- refresh to your short-term memory, as
- long as you wear the monitor. It'll take
- a couple of days for the chip to fuse,
- then you should start noticing the
- effects. It's a present." He smiled
- brightly.
-
- "Well, thanks...Peter." He looked
- around. "I've got something for you,
- too." He led the way to his temporary
- greenhouse. Inside he picked an armful
- of fresh winter beans nearly a foot
- long. "Here," he said. "It's fresh food.
- It's very good for you."
-
- "It is," Peter said doubtfully, looking
- at the unprocessed vegetable in his
- hands.
-
- "Try one," Jimmy said.
-
- "Like this?"
-
- "Sure. Here, I'll show you." Jimmy
- picked one and bit off the end. He
- grinned through the crunching sound of
- his chewing. "It's good."
-
- Peter tried it. Jimmy was right. The
- beans were very good, sweet and crisp.
- "Thanks. Jimmy," he said. "Thanks a
- lot."
-
- "Oh, forget it," Jimmy said. They both
- laughed.
